All over the world, a primary goal in teaching children is to establish a disciplined, orderly classroom environment. While this is a reasonable and necessary goal for children who are just beginning their socialization as humans, it can ultimately become dysfunctional when these practices continue as adults. Consider what is lost, for example, when grown-ups are required to:
a. Sit in rows.
b. Listen to the teacher lecturing, with no personal input.
c. Be limited to Right or Wrong answers, with nothing in between.
d. Be limited to one prescribed way of solving problems.
e. Have little say in what they will learn, when they will learn, or even how they will learn new information.Unfortunately, many police agencies are still using this system to determine how we train our employees.
